Apple to increase production to meet laptop demand

According to a report out of Digitimes, Apple is doubling the orders of select notebook models in response to increasing demand during this opening quarter of the year. Apple and Samsung are reportedly riding a wave of increasing demand and boosting production, while other manufacturers are preparing for a 5-10% decline in sales that will lower production to last year's level.

The report does not single out the popular Apple notebook(s) that are driving this demand, but the MacBook Air is the most likely culprit. The second generation Air model offers an extraordinarily thin profile with an 11- or 13-inch display and a price tag that starts at $999. Powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor with an SSD drive, the MacBook Air has become one of Apple's most sought after notebooks. Apple's latest quarterly earnings suggest the compact notebook is responsible for boosting Mac sales in the holiday 2010 quarter.
